Medical

Modern healthcare systems rely on many different components to make them work, and those components are usually miniscule in size. These components are the foundations of the performance and reliability that so many medical devices require in modern pharmaceutical solutions. Brandauer’s manufacturing facility can cater to all types of components from low volume right the way through to high-volume, continuous manufacturing.

Typical components

Brandauer produce a range of components that typically lend into the medical sector. This can be for consumable healthcare, right the way through to life critical components. Some components may include surgical implants, medical facemasks, dental floss cutters, scissor blades and even consumable healthcare products such as razor blade housings. Notable projects include ultra-precise implant components requiring stamping solutions in difficult materials such as titanium.

Volume requirements

The pharmaceutical industry spans a huge range of volumes, from brand new, specialist medical innovations through to commodity healthcare products produced in the millions. But how do you know what is the right for you when choosing which manufacturing methods is best for your business?

For low-volume components, Brandauer can manufacture components using the in-house dedicated laser cutting and metal forming facility. With standard pre-tooled methods of manufacturing, it cuts out the high initial cost of manufacturing a series progression tool.

This process can be tapped into as a continued low volume manufacturing process or even as a prototype for a larger scale project. Whatever the utilisation of this facility, customers can ensure all medical components can be manufactured to Brandauer’s standard stringent quality guidelines, without the upfront cost.

As annual volumes increase, precision progression tools become a more attractive solutions for long-term cost savings. Although tooling has that initial up-front cost, the piece part cost drastically reduces once the tool is in production. Meaning for long-term projects with volume, the initial investment in the tool gets paid back in reduced piece part costs.

Customers have a wide range of choices when it comes to picking the right tool and press. Brandauer’s team of experienced engineers will work closely with you on your project to ensure the most cost effective, accurate and efficient tool is chosen when developing your manufacturing process.

For the projects with the highest volume requirements, Brandauer’s modular tooling is a bespoke tooling solution created by our expert team. This enables opportunity for a highly efficient manufacturing process as the progression tool is split into multiple modules, meaning any maintenance, breakdown and tool changes that are required are done in considerably less time.

This process also allows for tool spares, meaning if a module needed to be repaired, a spare module could be put in place. This means downtime only encompasses the time to change over the tool, and cuts out the time taken to repair the broken module.

- Journey

Precision Manufacturing for Precision Industries

Component Name = Stainless steel blank for surgeon’s scissor blades
Volume = 10,000 parts per month
Value = £100k GBP per annum

Problem

The customer found difficulty sourcing a UK-based solution for thicker gauged stainless-steel parts, mainly due to limitations of challenging tolerances on some features of the component.

Solution

With Brandauer’s knowledge of material behaviours and being able to comfortably form metal to tolerances of 10-20 microns, a laser cut development approach was adopted first to ensure tolerances were met and all potential developments were cost efficient to the customer. Once this process was proven, the team designed a bespoke progression tool to assist with any high-volume applications that were to come in the future.
