Design & Make Challenge 2025
As shared in a previous update from November 2024, Brandauer had been preparing to take part in the Design & Make Challenge 2025.
As such, we were proud to take part in this year’s event, held on 8th July at the Junction Building at University of Warwick.
This annual event gives students from Years 10, 11 and 12 the opportunity to collaborate on engineering, manufacturing and technology tasks, and it was brilliant to see such a wide range of creative designs and strong engagement from the students throughout the day!

Our team had the opportunity to speak with students from all backgrounds about what we do at Brandauer, with a real appetite from the young people to learn more about precision engineering. We were encouraged by how many of them showed genuine interest in our work, asked great questions, and got stuck into conversations about manufacturing.
As well as chatting to the students, we also connected with teachers and industry professionals about arranging future visits to the Brandauer facility. These activity days are a fantastic way to bring engineering to life and help inspire the next generation of talent!
What is the purpose of the Design & Make Challenge?
The Design & Make Challenge is built on a simple concept: one day, one brief, endless possibilities.
Students from local schools are invited to take on the task of designing and building a mechanical device using only basic tools and materials. The exact brief is revealed on the day, adding to the excitement and encouraging quick thinking, creativity and teamwork.
Throughout the day, students receive guidance from engineers and apprentices representing the eight companies in the Manufacturing Assembly Network (MAN), including Brandauer. With hands-on support, they are encouraged to experiment, problem-solve and refine their ideas.
Devices are tested in front of a panel of experienced engineers, with prizes awarded in three key areas: Efficiency, Innovation and Manufacturing. The event has gone from strength to strength since its launch in 2018, with fantastic feedback from both students and teachers.
It’s a brilliant opportunity to inspire young people considering a future in engineering – but it’s also designed to spark the interest of those who may not yet be on a STEM path. By making problem-solving and design fun, the Design & Make Challenge helps open doors and minds to the possibilities a career in engineering can offer.
